Young pianists take the stage


During the festival, PianoEspoo is delighted to present young pianists from the Espoo music institutes and the Sibelius Academy, at concerts in two iconic Espoo churches. The first half of the one in Olari Church will be given by Eveliina Kuropatkina and Anna Phan from the Espoo Music Institute and Jesse Mäki from Juvenalia. Beginning the concert in Espoo Cathedral will be Espoo Music Institute students Zhanqiu Wang and Shania Yu. The performers in the second half will be Iivari Aalto and Mariia Maselska, laureates of the Sibelius Academy’s internal Helmi Vesa Competition.

Mariia Maselska (Sibelius Academy)

Iivari Aalto is a piano student at the Sibelius Academy. From 2018 to 2022, including two years at the Sibelius Academy youth department, he was taught by Kirill Kozlovski, and from autumn 2022 by Professor Tuija Hakkila. He is also in the class of guest professor Robert Levin. Aalto has studied also harpsichord and fortepiano in the Early Music Department. He is also interested in performing contemporary music, and performs regularly in various chamber music ensembles on both modern piano and period instruments.

Aalto has also worked as a chorepetiteur and orchestral pianist. His main employers have included the Finnish National Theatre, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, OperaBox, Åland Opera Festival and Opera Skaala. As a pianist, he has given concerts in the Nordic countries, all the Baltic countries and the USA. Together with his brother Artturi Aalto, he is the artistic director of the RADALLA Festival, which was be founded in 2023.

Iivari Aalto's competition successes include first prize at the Juvenalia Chamber Music Competition in 2017 and the Helmi-Vesa Piano Competitions in 2019 and 2023. His studies have been supported by the Sibelius Academy Support Foundation, Pro Musica and the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Mariia Maselska (b. 1995 Saint-Petersburg) studies with Erik T. Tawaststjerna and Hui-Ying Liu-Tawaststjerna at the Sibelius Academy. In 2014-2019 she studied under the guidance of professor Vladimir Mischouk in the Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, which she finished with honors. Following Erasmus exchange program, Mariia also studied with Einar Henning Smebye at the Norwegian Academy of Music in the autumn 2020.

Maselska is actively performing as a solo and chamber music pianist in various music events such as Gergely Bogányi’s grand piano concert (2021, Helsinki) and Flow Festival (2022, 2023, Helsinki). She is a prize winner of international festivals and competitions, among which is the Helmi Vesa competition (Helsinki, 2023). In addition, she has participated in master classes of Rena Shereshevskaya (France), Gerard Willems (Australia), Zbignevas Ibelgauptas (Lithuania), Aidas Puodziukas (Lithuania), Stefan Bojsten (Sweden), Sandra Chamoux (France), Juris Kalnciems (Latvia), Tamar Zhvania (Georgia).
