Karhusaari: Piano Classics Unveiled – Chopin!

  • Karhusaari Art Centre Karhusaarenpiha 5 02100 Espoo Finland (kartta)

Tuija Hakkila, piano
Kirill Kozlovski, piano
Tiina Karakorpi, piano

At the close of the festival weekend, the pianists who have performed in the chamber concerts come together to present some of the greatest masterpieces in the piano repertoire. With a Pleyel grand piano on site—the kind Frédéric Chopin himself favored—it is only fitting to feature some of his most important works. The Sonata in B minor and Polonaise-Fantaisie are late masterpieces where Chopin’s style reaches new depths of subtlety and ambiguity, while the Scherzo No. 2 remains one of the young composer’s most electrifying and enduringly popular works. A rare chance to hear these pieces in Finland on a period instrument!

Robert Schumann was captivated by Chopin’s music from the start—he wrote glowing reviews even of the surprising Là ci darem la mano Variations. The reserved, classically minded Chopin, however, could not relate to Schumann’s overtly romantic tone, nor did he appreciate the Kreisleriana cycle dedicated to him. Today, though, audiences admire the poetry and passion of both composers, whose artistic paths diverged yet remain deeply connected.
