The Kentala Trio is a relatively new addition to the Finnish chamber music scene: a collaboration between three seasoned specialists in early music, offering a refreshing perspective on music history and the core repertoire.
The figure of Felix Mendelssohn looms large over early 19th-century music, even when composers consciously sought to break away from his influence. Comparing the trios of the siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn is fascinating. Felix’s music is as balanced and polished as his reputation suggests, the product of the same irresistible talent that shaped the modern conservatory in Leipzig, perfected orchestral conducting at the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and performed Beethoven’s Hammerklavier and Waldstein Sonatas with apparent ease.
Fanny’s trio, by contrast, is structurally more experimental, weaving in references as diverse as her brother’s Elijahoratorio. Intended to be her first large-scale published work, the trio was only performed privately before her untimely death. Felix assisted in preparing the manuscript for publication, which is why this posthumously published piece holds a special place among Fanny’s works—it was accessible to performers from the very beginning.
